Google's paying $20,000 to hack Chrome -- any takers?

So far, Chrome is the only browser of the big four -- Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer being the other three -- to escape the Pwn2Own hacking competition unscathed the past two years. (Sorry Opera aficionados, looks like there's not enough of you to merit a place in the contest... yet.) Evidently, its past success has Google confident enough to pony up a cool $20,000 and a CR-48 laptop to anyone able to find a bug in its code and execute a clean sandbox escape on day one of Pwn2Own 2011. Should that prove too daunting a task, contest organizer TippingPoint will match El Goog's $10,000 prize (still $20,000 total) for anyone who can exploit Chrome and exit the sandbox through non-Google code on days two and three of the event. For those interested in competing, Pwn2Own takes place March 9th through 11th in Vancouver at the CanSecWest conference. The gauntlet has been thrown -- your move, hackers.

LG Optimus Pad (aka G-Slate) coming to MWC 2011 with Honeycomb, Tegra 2 and 3D display

The T-Mobile G-Slate may be fully official now, but the rest of the world needs love too, and LG's just announced it intends to deliver said loving at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona a few days from now. The Optimus Pad, as this 8.9-inch tablet will be known outside the US, will offer Android Honeycomb as its OS, along with a 3D-capable 1280 x 768 display, dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a front-facing camera plus a pair of imagers on the back allowing for 3D picture-taking, 32GB of onboard storage, and a 6,400mAh battery. We should be getting to grips with the device at MWC in due course -- look for it to launch alongside or shortly after its US twin hits retail in March.

SwiftKey for Android Honeycomb tablets demonstrated, looks thumbtastic

Feast your eyes on the first 'improved' on-screen keyboard for Android Honeycomb tablets! With the same prediction engine from the smartphone variant, and with a beautiful tablet-optimized two-thumb interface, it looks like SwiftKey will redefine text input on tablets.

Engadget has the complete story, some more photos, and some hands-on experience, but judging by the videos (included after the break), typing with SwiftKey for tablets looks really fast. The keyboard is broken up into three panels, with letters and punctuation placed under your left and right thumbs, and the number pad in the middle. SwiftKey's Fluency Prediction Engine can apparently predict "around a third of words" before you even press any keys -- and once you do start typing, the most likely prediction can be completed with the space bar, and second and third predictions can be selected by using the two big panels near your left and right thumbs. If you watch the videos you can see some complete sentences being typed in just a few seconds -- crazy.

The best thing, at least from SwiftKey's perspective, is that you can't see much competition coming from other input replacements, like Swype. With larger screens, the handwriting paradigm doesn't really make sense. It's more a matter of utilizing screen real estate to leverage the power of our thumbs! SwiftKey may have found a very nice niche indeed.

SMS to Swype for Android adds your common words to Swype's dictionary

Earlier, Erez covered Swype's excellent word-learning abilities. Not only is its built-in dictionary comprehensive, but it also learns names from your address book. There's still one stumbling block to switching to Swype, though: all of your custom words and phrases that you've already added to the dictionary. Depending on where you live, and your circle of friends, you probably use very different 'txtspk', and adding them manually to Swype is a pain in the ass.

SMS to Swype, however, is a tiny app that simply adds every unique word in your SMSes to your Swype dictionary. It takes just two or three clicks and, if you have a wealth of SMSes on your phone, you won't ever have to run it again. It's free, and available from the Android Market, AppBrain, or use the QR code after the break.

SmartWatch Could Serve as 'Seismograph' for Seizure Detection

Caregivers of people with epilepsy and related disorders harbor a major fear: that a seizure could occur without their knowledge. Now, a wristwatch-style device aptly named the "SmartWatch" can detect seizures and alert caregivers within seven to 10 seconds, explained Stanford University pediatric neurology professor Donald Olson, M.D., one of the technology's developers.

Touch駧 assigns actions to multitouch gestures on your Linux system

Canonical demonstrated Ubuntu 10.10's multitouch functionality a few months back. If you haven't felt compelled to play with it before, a new app called Touchégg might provide a little extra incentive. It's an open source project which lets you define custom actions and execute them with a touch gesture. Canonical's uTouch gesture library is required, but it should already be installed if you're using Ubuntu 10.10 or a derivative.

Configuring Touchégg requires doing a little text hacking in its config file, but the process is fairly straightforward (as you can see in the video after the break). If you've got a laptop with a multitouch-capable touchpad or a USB input device like Apple's Magic Trackpad hooked up to your Linux box, Touchégg will have you switching workspaces and apps with the flick of a finger (or two or three) in no time.

Check out the screencast after the break -- it's pretty slick, even if you can't see that the gestures are actually being performed.

Android Market Web Store finally released, better pricing controls and in-app purchases coming to Market

The Android Market Web Store has finally been released -- you can access it right now: http://market.android.com/

It's very similar to AppBrain, but you can purchase apps directly from the Web -- and push apps directly to your phone.

Additional features of the Web Store:
  • Lots of developer control to make app pages look attractive
  • The page is laid out intelligently, with links to other apps by the developer, screenshots of the app -- in essence, it's just like any other App Store
  • Sharing tools are built-in -- easy to send apps to friends, via Twitter, email
  • If you open a Web Store link on your phone, it opens the Market -- genius!
  • You can sort apps in a variety of ways -- compatibility (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc.), popularity, and so on
  • You can see all of your installed/purchased apps -- just like AppBrain
Better monetization features are coming, too. In-app payments are coming -- and the whole 'buying something in another currency' issue will be alleviated with "Buyer Currency Support." (I'm not exactly sure how this will help, but it sounds like it will prevent those nasty cross-currency charges and exchange rates that those of us in Europe have been enjoying.)

There are some screenshots of in-app purchases, and Tap Tap Revenge for Android, after the break.

Startups And Investors To Rock @GeeknRolla, March 30, London

Three years ago I created the concept of the GeeknRolla annual conference to bring together Europe's technology startups to network with investors and talk about how they create and build themselves. This year we are stepping on the gas pedal. We want to launch 15-20 brand new startups there and our tagline this year is this: "Investor Dealflow. Startup Exposure". As with last year there is a special emphasis on launching startups and connecting them with investors, who will comprise our judging panels. There will also be a DemoPit for startups to showcase their products. We have some interesting plans to give exposure to even more. The now legendary GeeknRolla Afterparty will also do a lot to help the networking. I'd strongly advise you get a ticket. Last year we more than sold out shortly after GeeknRolla was announced. You can follow any specific updates on the GeeknRolla twitter feed. We're initially announcing our first wave of speakers, and more are coming. But here's who we have so far: Iain Dodsworth (founder of TweetDeck), Tariq Krim (founder of Jolicloud), Morten Lund (early investor in Skype, now of Tradeshift and Everbread), Wendy Tan White (founder of Moonfruit), Martin Varsavsky (founder of Fon). If you are a European startup in stealth or in private beta and want to launch at GeeknRolla, then fill out this form. The deadline is February 24. Any startup selected to pitch on stage will get one free ticket (for the person pitching) and there is no charge to pitch.

Android launcher showdown: LauncherPro, ADW, Zeam, GO Launcher and QuickDesk

Android's greatest, platform-defining feature is customizability. The entire operating system is open-sourced, APIs are laid bare, and almost every user-facing part of the OS can be modified by apps.

There's no surprise, then, that replacement apps exist for almost every part of Android's stock functionality. In turn, to complete the circle of life, new versions of Android incorporate the functionality of replacement apps. It's the ecosystem of replacement apps, in fact, that helps drive Android's disgustingly fast iteration.

Today we're going to look at by far the most popular type of feature-replacement apps: launchers. With strong, age-old offerings from LauncherPro and ADW, and fresh upstarts Zeam, GO Launcher and QuickDesk, the field couldn't be stronger. Competition is driving developers to cram new features in on a weekly basis. The end result, of course, is that you and I get to reap the rewards.

But which launcher replacement is the best? There's only one way to find out.

Firefox Home Dash experiment offers a radical new UI for your Mozilla browser

It's a little hard to describe what Firefox Home Dash is -- beyond the basics, anyway. It's an experimental add-on born from Mozilla's Prospector project which replaces (or removes) nearly all of the Firefox UI. You're left with a title bar, scrollbar, the big orange button, and not much else. The goal is to get the browser out of the way and just give you the Web.

Hover over the Firefox logo in the top-left of your window or press Ctrl+T, and Dash will appear. The Firefox Awesome Bar floats to the left, offering all the same functionality you find in the browser right now. It'll search your history, bookmarks, or submit your query to any search engine with the click of a favicon. The right half of your Dash is populated by your currently open tabs (in a strip along the top -- pinned tabs on the left) and frequently visited pages (shown below). Sites you visit most often will be placed in one of the four larger, central slides. As you can see from my screenshot, Dash doesn't always render thumbnails -- but this is the first release of an experimental add-on, so we were expecting a few bugs.

When you pause on a thumbnail, Dash will display it in the background. Click the page image, and it zooms into the foreground. Previews also appear when you Ctrl+Tab or Shift+Ctrl+Tab to change your active tab. You can also drag tab thumbnails to re-order your browser tabs.

Dash is interesting to play with, though there's definitely an adjustment period required. Unless you're used to browsing in full screen mode, it's a bit odd looking at Firefox with practically no chrome. Still, the only UI element I really missed was the tab bar -- I prefer having something to click on to switch tabs over paging through them with hotkeys or invoking Dash and clicking a thumbnail.

If you want to give the add-on a try, download Firefox Home Dash from Mozilla. Firefox 4 is required, and you can start using Dash right away -- it's restart-free!

Firefox for Android now supports Personas themes

Mozilla has released the Personas add-on for Firefox Mobile, allowing you to install any of the hundreds of lightweight themes available at getpersonas.com. While there's not much chrome to theme on Firefox Mobile, there will no doubt be plenty of users who leap at the chance to customize its interface. Your Persona will appear in a few places: on the Awesome Screen (which appears when you tap in the address bar), on Firefox Mobile's tools panels, in the Form Assistant, and in the Find in Page dialog.

If you've got Firefox for Android installed, just hit the add-ons page and check the recommended add-ons at the bottom of the page -- Personas should be listed there. If not, just search for it and install!

Several new and ongoing phenomenons, all intertwined, will mark the next phase of application development. There will likely be more emphasis on mobile apps. Tablets, particularly the iPad, are already cannibalizing netbook sales, and as mobile devices get multicore processors with more power and capabilities, they'll increasingly be useful in the enterprise.

Google Unveils Android Market Webstore. It?s Already Live!

Today at their Mountain View headquarters, Google held an event to show off Honeycomb, the latest version of the Android operating system. After some demos of the OS itself, Android engineering director Chris Yerga took the stage to show off a big new feature: the Android Market Webstore. Yep, the Market just hit the web. Finally. And it's already live. Find it here. Yerga notes that up until know, the only way to find and install apps was via the Market on your phone. But now users can simply go to their browser. And it's more seamless than something like the iTunes native app because when you select an app, it can be set up to download automatically to your Android device. "There's no wires, no syncing with computers. None of that sort of nonsense. Everything is connected," Yerga says.

Automatically download torrents with uTorrent and RSS feeds

This week's series of tips is all about downloading files via BitTorrent. We'll highlight ways in which to torrent more efficiently, obtain higher download speeds, and generally make the whole process easier. For more tech tips, check our Tips index.

If you've decided that text-based console torrenting isn't for you, the next best solution is automating your torrent downloads with RSS. Most big-name BitTorrent clients support RSS feeds, but for this tip we'll focus on uTorrent.

First, your favorite torrent source needs to actually have RSS feeds. The Pirate Bay has them, and Torrent Reactor has per-category and per-genre feeds. For TV shows, you can't go wrong with EZRSS. Once you have the URLs for an RSS feed or two, open up uTorrent, click Feeds on the left bar, and then the Add RSS Feed button. Paste the URL in, give it a name, and make sure "Do not automatically download all items" is selected. Do the same for all of the RSS feeds that you want to use.

Now it's time for the fun bit! You have to create filters that parse each of the RSS feeds for the torrents that you want to download. Hit Options > RSS Downloader (or Ctrl+R). In general, you type the name of what you want to automatically download into the Filter text box, such as "Heroes" or "Ubuntu". Rather than walk you through the entire process, the uTorrent site has a good tutorial that you can follow -- and EZRSS's guide is excellent, too. Once you've set up some filters, they become active immediately -- and if you've set them up correctly, you can minimize uTorrent and never manually add torrents ever again!

Finally Mac users, if you're using Transmission (which you should be!), check out this guide on setting up RSS feed automation.

Motorola Xoom first benchmark: 1823 in Quadrant

We're unabashed spec junkies here at Engadget, and can you blame us? There are mountains of new devices every year, and it helps to have bullet points and numerical differentiators to cut through the fluff. That's why we're happy to say we got the chance to run the Quadrant benchmark on Motorola's Tegra 2-powered Xoom, and have a number with which to compare it against the many competitors sure to breech Android's bow soon. 1823 is the magic number -- which doesn't quite compare to the LG Optimus 2X -- but that's with a non-optimized smartphone version of Quadrant running the app on the tablet's sizable 1280 x 800 display, no less. What's more, Quadrant cleared up some of the codename confusion we've seen out of Moto as of late, as it turns out the Xoom also identifies itself as both Trygon and Stingray. Good to know!

PlayOn brings Hulu, Netflix viewing to Android beta testers

Whlie Hulu and Netflix still don't have first-party apps in the Android Market, PlayOn users will soon be able to tap into the popular video services on their Android smartphones. Once again, it's PlayOn which has a solution. PlayOn released an iOS version back in August 2010 and is now passing out invites to its customers (like this one sent to us by Chris H.) to join an expanded Android beta test. There are a couple of prerequisites involved, of course. You need a a licensed copy of PlayOn and a device running Android 2.2 Froyo or better, and PlayOn also only works over Wi-Fi -- at least for now.

The invite also offers encouragement for those who don't make the beta cut: PlayOn for Android is "very close" to being released into the wild.

Use a virtual private server to BitTorrent faster and more efficiently

This week's series of tips is all about downloading files via BitTorrent. We'll highlight ways in which to torrent more efficiently, obtain higher download speeds, and generally make the whole process easier. For more tech tips, check our Tips index.

In almost every case, your download speed on a torrent is dictated by your upload speed. If you manage to download a few chunks, and then upload those at high speed, you will very soon find your pipe very full indeed.

Now, if you're lucky enough to have a juicy upload connection at home (a few megabits), you probably have no problem filling your entire downstream bandwidth. If you're stuck with a weak DSL connection, however, a virtual private server (VPS), or 'seedbox', is what you need.

A VPS [Google search link] can cost as little as a few dollars a month, and for that you get access to 100Mbps both upstream and down. 350 megabyte torrents will complete in just a few seconds, and in general you'll get more bandwidth than you'll ever need (100GB or more). Once your torrents are complete on your VPS, you can download to your home computer at full speed. This also leaves your home's upstream bandwidth free for other uses, like surfing the Web!

Most VPSes run Linux, though, so you will need to learn how to use a console torrent client like rTorrent -- but that's tomorrow's tip!

Angry Birds Rio: Rovio secures silver screen tie-in with animated film Rio

Rovio has just announced its first big-money commercial tie-in with upcoming film Rio -- which, rather unsurprisingly, is a film about birds. With the imaginative title Angry Birds Rio, the new game will have a story that revolves around the characters from the film (which comes from the makers of Ice Age!)

It's an all-new game with 45 levels, and it will be available on "smartphones and tablets worldwide." Despite making its debut on the PS3 and PSP, there's no mention of the Angry Birds Rio coming to consoles. The trailer is after the break -- and it's worth watching just for the first few seconds. The game will arrive sometime in March.

In other news, there'll also be a Valentine's Day version of the game. The backgrounds are pink, the birds are pink, and the pigs' defenses are pink. How adorable. Oh, and apparently there's also plans for an animated Angry Birds TV show. Very few details are known as yet, but of course, your trusty Bird Squad will apprise you of any new information.

[Some random trivia: the main character of the film, Blu, is voiced by
Jesse Eisenberg -- who played Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network.]

Anonymous on UK Arrests: This Means War

"Dear UK government," the ominous letter begins. "It has come to our attention that you deemed it necessary to arrest five of our fellow anons for their participation in the DDoS attacks against PayPal, Mastercard, and others, that have been carried out in our name in retaliation for those organizations' actions against WikiLeaks ... we take this as a serious declaration of war ... Boulder?s eSpace Center Wants To Make Aerospace A Startup-Friendly Industry

Private sector space tech companies ? from Virgin Galactic to Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) ? have been doing what only government agencies were empowered to do in earlier generations, launch vehicles into space, improve the fuel efficiency of aircraft, and more. A Boulder-based incubator called The eSpace Center for Space Entrepreneurship still thinks the industry could be friendlier to startups and innovators, though. Founded in partnership with the University of Colorado, and with SNC as its lead sponsor, the eSpace incubator is currently seeking its third class of aerospace entrepreneurs, and reviewing applications on a rolling basis. Diane Dimeff, executive director at the eSpace Center, says the incubator will: give financial grants of up to $20,000 in seed funding to selected startups, and match them with mentors who are chief executives of companies relevant to each new venture...

HTML5 now has an official logo, looks oddly reminiscent of Superman's leotard

HTML5 shield logo
In a rather curious development, HTML5 has garnered enough celebrity to warrant its own official logo. Its heraldic and angular appearance obviously represents HTML5's role as the resilient vanguard of the open Web -- or, on second thoughts, it may simply be a reference to Superman's S shield.

Neither HTML4, HTML3, or indeed any version of HTML, has ever had its own logo before. There is an ancient 'HTML square', but as that dates to before 1995, it probably accompanied HTML2 and appeared on just a handful of websites.

The HTML5 logo website itself is, rather fittingly, a beautiful bastion of pure semantic goodness. Gone is the awful Web 2.0 'feedback' tab, with a beautiful 'Nav' menu sitting its place. There are also great descriptions for each of HTML5's major new features and some nice 'badge designers' -- in case you want to put the HTML5 logo on your site.

138,000 Holocaust-related photos now online, powered by Google and Picasa

Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to Holocaust victims, in partnership with Google, has just created what can only be described as the definitive online Holocaust archive. The collection consists of 138,327 images, most of which are photos.

The collection, which represents a few years of full-time work by a handful of Googlers, has been made available just in time for the UN International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is today. If the immense, digitized archive wasn't enough, the Google team went one step further and used OCR to transcribe any text found on the objects, which means that passports, visas and other notes can be searched for using a normal Google search. Google gives the example of searching for rena weiser, which returns her Chilean visa -- and obviously, any families searching for relatives that may have been part of the Holocaust will find this invaluable.

Because the collection seems to be based on Picasa galleries, all of the usual social functionality is built-in. You can comment on photos, and you're encouraged to share stories if you find the photo of someone you know. The only problem is that navigation of the archive seems to be a hit-and-miss affair -- there are just thousands of albums, and they're all unsorted.

How to pin documents directly to the Windows 7 taskbar

You may have tried to pin a document or file you work on frequently to your Windows 7 taskbar, only to learn that it's too smart for that. Instead, you wind up with a pinned item for the program associated with the file's type, with your file pinned to the jump list. After reading a writeup at Lifehacker earlier today, I couldn't help thinking there was an easier solution than what they proposed -- which requires setting up a task using the Windows Scheduler. As it turns out, there is a much simpler way.

First, locate your file -- mine is C:\Users\Server\Desktop\foo.txt. Next, right click on your desktop and New > Shortcut. In the target, specify the program you want to execute and its path in quotes -- "C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe". Add a space, and input the location of your file (again enclosed in quotes). The full target looks like this:
"C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe" "C:\Users\Server\Desktop\foo.txt"
Now, give your shortcut a name -- this text will appear when you hover over your pinned taskbar icon. Before pinning, you can also right-click and choose properties if you'd like to choose a different icon for your shortcut. Once you're all done, left-click and drag the shortcut to the taskbar. That's it!

I've used notepad for this example and tested with Paint and Paint.NET, but this will work for other files and programs as well. As long as you know the path to your file and the program you want it to open in, you should have no problem pinning items to your taskbar.

Facebook temporarily removes developer access to your home address and mobile number

Facebook, after a quiet announcement of the new home address and mobile phone access permissions, has made a quick about-turn. Citing some "useful feedback," Facebook has decided to to make changes "to help ensure you only share this information when you intend to do so."

The feature, which will be re-enabled in a few weeks, will allow Facebook app developers to request both your home address and mobile phone number. The changes being made will hopefully involve a bold, explicit warning in the Request for Permission boxes -- the boxes that you click through to use a new app -- but hopefully there are some better solutions on the table, too.

Ideally, Facebook would give us the option of securing your details permanently, from your Privacy Settings page. There should be a check box that simply says "never give my home address out" -- but that might be a little too hopeful.

Editorial: The rise of the notbook, the fall of the netbook

Notbook (n.) -- An affordable ultraportable laptop, typically with a 11.6-inch or 12-inch display that is not a netbook. It packs more power than a netbook (i.e. can handle 1080p video and Flash at fullscreen) and provides a more comfortable computing experience than the typical, 10-inch underpowered, shrunken Atom-based laptop. Most do not have optical drives, but do last for over five hours on a charge. Unlike pricey ultraportable laptops, notbooks are more affordable and start at around $400.
About six months ago, the 11.6-inch Dell Inspiron M101z arrived on my doorstep for review. The AMD Neo-powered system looked like a slightly enlarged netbook, but in a briefing with Dell, the product manager reinforced quite a few times that the system was absolutely "not a netbook." I can't remember his exact wording, but he made it crystal clear -- the $449 Inspiron M101z was so much more powerful than an Intel Atom netbook that it could be one's primary machine. Obviously, I started calling these sorts of laptops "notbooks," and over the next few months, more and more of them started popping up. Some of them paired Atom with an NVIDIA Ion GPU (e.g. Eee PC 1215N), while others used AMD's Neo chip and more recently AMD's new Fusion Zacate APU. (Intel's Core ULV-powered systems are frankly too expensive to be considered in this category, though some Pentium / Core 2 Duo systems, like the Acer Timeline X1810T, could qualify.)

Uh, so what? There's a new crop of more powerful, affordable, and highly mobile laptops -- what's the big deal? Well, while many think tablets are what will ultimately cut the netbook market down to size, it's the notbooks that will also seriously hit the Atom-based lilliputian laptops of today where it really hurts. Don't get me wrong, ARM-powered tablets like the iPad and Motorola Xoom are going to impact netbook sales in a big way, too (heck, they already have!), but mark my words, notbooks or affordable ultraportables will take a noticeable chunk of both the netbook and the mainstream laptop market. There's finally a class of laptops that provide a terrific balance between primary and mobile computing without breaking the bank. Think I'm crazy? Hit the break to understand what I'm talking about.

Brammo Empulse RR electric race bike goes screaming by at Thunderhill test (video)
We haven't heard an awful lot about the Brammo Empulse since it launched last summer, but Asphalt and Rubber managed to catch the thing doing its thing at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, California. The bike and its crew were out for some testing, abbreviated tail all taped full of telemetry and spitting back data as the it quietly screamed its way around the track. The race-ready Empulse RR is getting ready for the 2011 TTXGP series for electric race bikes, where it'll be competing against the likes of the Mission R -- which hopefully will have put its fairings back on by then.
