It?s A Good Day To Be An iPad Competitor . . . Oh Wait, It?s Not

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors. I've had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn't as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that's true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary. Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can't think of any products from Apple's competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread allows screenshots with no root required

android screenshot without rootUp until now, all the Android app screenshots you've seen floating around have been taken using either the Android SDK or third-party applications which require root access. That's because Android -- unlike webOS and iOS -- hasn't provided a simple way for users to capture images on their devices' screens.

According to Android Central, that has changed in Android 2.3.3. Rooting will no longer be required "because of some changes in the way the SurfaceFlinger service handles what it captures from the framebuffer." The non-geeky version: Android 2.3.3 isn't as stingy with allowing apps to intercept what's being displayed on the screen.

Their post also jokes that Android users can now give the raspberry to their WP7-toting friends, but let's remember this change is part of Android 2.3.3. Many devices don't have Android 2.2 yet, and even less have 2.3.X -- so it's going to be a while before root-free screenshots become the norm in the Android world.

Mozy announces sync apps for desktop, iOS and Android

Desktop-to-cloud backup provider Mozy has announced that it will soon release Mozy Sync, a file synchronization service like Dropbox or SugarSync. The company has also stated that Android and iOS apps will be available and that an invite-only beta is underway. You'll have to be a current MozyHome customer to be considered as a tester.

What's not spelled out is how the service will work. Will Mozy Sync be a value-add for Mozy's recently re-priced backup service? Will Mozy Sync be its own beast and require a separate subscription? We're hoping to receive early access and more details soon, and we'll fill in the blanks as soon as we can.

Visualized: US smartphone market share, by manufacturer and platform, made pretty

They say a picture is worth a thousand words -- but in this case, a picture is worth tens of billions of dollars in market share. Nielsen has broken down its US smartphone market share stats between November and January in two dimensions -- by market share and by platform -- and stuffed all that data into a single block of mesmerizing color. It's interesting to see the Apple and RIM juggernauts flanked by two imposing, red slivers of HTC, isn't it? The research firm also took a look at platforms by age group; the shares are surprisingly consistent across the board, though Android does have a slight edge with the young'uns. Follow the break for that chart.

LastPass XSS vulnerability found, website and browser add-ons affected (updated)

Mike Cardwell, the Stallmanite who recently discovered a fantastically covert way of working out which Web services you're currently logged in to, has found a nasty XSS vulnerability in the LastPass password manager. The cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability not only allows nefarious types to see which sites you've recently logged in to, but it also provides access your email address and password reminder.

First off: don't worry. Cardwell reported the vulnerability to LastPass before writing it up, and it has since been fixed. We're not sure if the fix has propagated out to the Chrome and Firefox add-ons -- but we have to assume that Cardwell wouldn't have written his blog post if the vulnerability still existed.

With that said, you should still be more than a little concerned about the fundamental architecture of LastPass as an in-the-cloud password manager. While this cross-site scripting attack was fixed quickly, Cardwell thinks a similar attack "could easily happen again in future."

Beyond being susceptible to XSS attacks, LastPass doesn't even use HSTS, which means that man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks are also rather easy to pull off.

It's very hard for us to recommend LastPass as a password manager when further vulnerabilities will almost certainly be found. For the time being, you should check out KeePass, an offline password manager that, for now, is a lot more secure than LastPass.

Update: LastPass has now implemented HSTS and a few other features to make their website and browser add-ons a lot harder to attack in the future. Hooray!

[Thanks to Brad for the tip!]

Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive

OS X Lion Time Machine local snapshots
9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.

HP TouchPad shoots down planes, shows off next-gen Snapdragon's GPU (video)

We're willing to bet Qualcomm's dual-core Adreno 220 GPU is an abstract concept to most readers, but we can put it into perspective real quick -- here it is in the HP TouchPad, pumping pixels and mapping textures to a seriously stunning little air combat game. We got our hands on the webOS 3.0 tablet and gave Polarbit's Armageddon Squadron II a whirl at GDC 2011, and the experience felt pretty solid overall, framerate only dipping significantly when unleashing a hefty barrage of rockets upon our foes. What's more, the tablet easily -- and automatically -- paused our game when flexing webOS's multitasking muscle to check a text message that had just come in. What's that you say? You're wondering how the HP TouchPad does text messages? Well, it doesn't quite -- it requires a webOS smartphone paired via Bluetooth to share the cellular modem for texts and calls. But you knew that already, right?

Armageddon Squadron wasn't the only title Qualcomm had handy to show off the power of the Adreno 220, though, as SouthEnd Interactive's Desert Winds seems to be the feather in the company's cap. It's a 3D action-adventure title starring some very fancy lighting effects for a mobile game -- not to mention a buxom female swordslinger who dredges up memories of ATI's Ruby. See that after the break!

Update: Now with working video!

Apple slashes original iPad price to $399, iPad 2 not up for pre-order yet

Steve Jobs told us earlier that the new iPad pricing will stay exactly the same as the original iPad -- meaning a base price of $499 for the 16GB WiFi version. Well, even though you can't get an iPad 2 until March 11th (nor can you even pre-order it yet), Apple is already putting the original models on sale. Right now you can grab up that base model, 16GB WiFi only iPad for $399, with prices ranging up to $729 for the 64GB 3G model. Moreover, you can also snatch a refurbished one for a starting price of $349. If you're in the market for yesterday's model, now is certainly the time to grab one.

iPad 2 first hands-on! (update: even more video!)

Well there you have it folks -- the absurdly thin new iPad 2. We just got our hands all over the next greatest tablet from Apple and it's... very much the same, save for that new body. There's no question that the industrial design is top notch, and we did notice some speedier behavior when jumping around -- but the core OS remains unchanged, so this won't be a major shock. We're spending more time with the device and getting impressions, but for now, feast your eyes on the galleries below.

Update: Okay, we've had a chance to play around the with iPad 2 some more, and here are our big takeaways from the experience.
  • This thing is insanely fast. We're not joking -- it's blazingly fast. Everything the iPad 2 does feels like it's on turbo. We're uploading a video of the some evidence of this, you'll be appropriately stunned.
  • The design feels great in your hands. Sleek, super thin -- much nicer to hold than the previous version. Definitely has more of a magazine than book feel. Everything is tight and solid. It is pretty amazing how thin they've gotten the device.
  • Even software made for the first generation device feels better here. Safari is definitely sped up. Games looked great on-screen, though obviously there are no updates to the resolution of screen technology here.
  • This is an evolutionary step, but we definitely don't feel like it's lacking for features. People are going to gobble these up when they see the new apps.
Update 2: We've got some video after the break!

Update 3: More videos!

Speed up Internet Explorer 9 with the Add-on Performance Advisor

Did you know that Internet Explorer 9 has add-ons? Like, real, experience-altering extensions? Head on over to the IE Add-ons Gallery and take a gander. Marvel at how the most popular add-on in the U.K. has a mind-blowing 18 ratings.

Truth be told, there isn't a whole lot to choose from, but if you do end up using a few add-ons or toolbars, you may run into the Add-on Performance Advisor. If any add-on takes too long to load, you'll see a notification at the bottom of your window (see above) -- and if you click through, you'll be shown a list of all your add-ons and how long they take to load (see right). It's just a matter of clicking Disable on any add-ons that are bogging down your surfing, and away you go!

From the same window you can also select the threshold for slow add-ons (but the default of 0.2 seconds is fine).

If you just want to see the general performance of your add-ons and toolbars, click Cog > Manage add-ons and every add-on's load time can be seen.

[Admittedly, a better question to ask at the start would've been 'does IE9 have any useful add-ons?' but that was beyond the scope of this post.]

Linux Mint 10 KDE released; Mint 11 based on Ubuntu 11.04, but no Unity

Mint 10 KDE
Just a few days after the emergence of a release candidate, Linux Mint 10 KDE has been released. There are a few bugs (most notably, VLC is slow to open files), so be sure to check the full release notes.

Mint, which claims to be the 4th most popular desktop operating system (behind Windows, OS X and Ubuntu), prides itself on its elegance and out-of-the-box ease-of-use. With version 10, the only significant change is the addition of KDE 4.6, but the Software Manager and Update Manager have also received numerous tweaks. Adobe Flash 10.2 'Square' also makes its first appearance with Mint 10.

If you want to give Mint 10 a go, be sure to grab it from one of the mirrors, or use the 32- or 64-bit torrents -- the Mint site itself seems pretty slow at the moment, probably because of Mint's massive popularity...!

As far as Mint 11 goes, we now know that it will be called 'Katya', based on Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, and released in May. Interestingly, Mint 11 will use neither GNOME Shell or Unity -- instead, it will use a traditional GNOME 3-based desktop layout.

Microsoft cloud bulges with Live Mesh data

live mesh
Based on a post from the Windows Team blog, it appears as though users are indeed heading "to the cloud!" Live Mesh -- the company's cross-device synchronization and remoting platform -- now boasts more than 5 million connected devices.

From those devices, 3 million users have pushed more than 2.2 petabytes to the Windows Live cloud. That's a whole lotta data -- but we wonder how much higher that statistic would be if Microsoft let us use the full 25GB of SkyDrive space for syncing...

A while back, Google started offering inexpensive storage upgrades for Google Docs storage. Now, users with a domain set up on Google Apps can purchase additional storage, too. The change means you can boost your disk space to 20GB for a paltry $5 per year, or a whopping 1TB for $256 per year (which works out to about $22 per month). That's a very reasonable price for additional cloud storage, and well worth it if you're a heavy Google Docs user.

The number of apps available for Windows Phone 7 is starting to climb sharply and we've seen more good apps of late, too -- not just soundboards and wrappers around mobile websites. If you're after a nice WP7 app to manage your grocery store excursions, check out Shopping Lists Manager.

Create a list, add items, and you'll get a checklist to mark off items as you add them to your grocery basket (or cart, if that's how you roll). Shopping Lists Manager will also optionally hide checked items so they're not cluttering up your list view. Better still, you can register and then sync your lists between two devices -- very handy if you and your roommate or significant other want to collaborate on purchase planning.

Steve Jobs' knighthood rejected by Gordon Brown?

As a loyal iPod user, you'd have thought that Queen Elizabeth II would have seen fit to bestow an honorary knighthood on a certain Steven Paul Jobs by now. After all, Sir Bill received his back in 2005 even though his company couldn't quite get its cellphone or tablet strategies to stick with consumers. According to an anonymous senior Labour MP who left Parliament in the last election, Jobs had reached the final stages of approval for "services to technology" only to be rejected in 2009 by the then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Why? Well, according to The Telegraph, Jobs had the audacity to turn down an offer to speak at Labour's annual conference. In retaliation we hear that Apple is holding Jony Ive -- himself, an honorary Commander of the British Empire -- hostage in an infinitely looping orange grove somewhere in northern California.

Mac OS X Lion: the multi-touch offspring of Windows 7 and iOS

Windows 7 OS X Lion
Yesterday, Apple released the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion, the first major update to OS X since August 2009. Two major things have uprooted the computing world since then: the launch of Windows 7 in October 2009, and the iPad in 2010.

It's no surprise, then, that OS X Lion looks like the lovechild of Windows 7 and iOS. White box-thumping purists will claim, somehow, that this is revolutionary, world-changing, pivotal. Realists will acknowledge that, for the first time in at least a decade, Apple might be following Microsoft's lead.

Hyperbole aside, though, we should be excited: more than anything, OS X Lion is a glimpse of the future of tablet computing.

WordPress 3.1 releasedWith over 2,000 code commits and 820 bug and feature fixes, WordPress 3.1 has been released. You can download the new version in its entirety, or simply log into your WordPress.org installation and update via the Dashboard.

The most notable new new change is a massively overhauled writing interface, which should make the entire publishing process both more streamlined and less intimidating for new users. Linking back to old posts and pages is now a lot easier, too (just click a button and start searching), and lots of rarely-used blocks have now been hidden by default (they can be re-enabled in Screen Options).

There's a new Admin Bar, which appears at the top of every page and makes moving around your blog's back end a whole lot easier. For power users and theme makers, there are now Post Formats, which significantly increase the flexibility of WordPress layouts.

For a complete list of the changes and new features, check the WordPress 3.1 Codex page.

CueThat for Netflix adds movies to your queue while you surf

CueThat is a slick little browser add-on that lets you add any movie you happen upon while browsing the Web to your Netflix queue. Just highlight a title, right click and choose CueThat from your context menu, and voila: it's added to your list. It even works with movies that are still only screening in theaters.

CueThat is offered as an extension for both Firefox and Chrome, though the bookmarklet works just as well and is usable in any Web browser. It's well worth adding to your bookmark toolbar if you're a Netflix user who hunts for movie reviews or recommendations while browsing the Web.

Keydex: The Ugliest iPad ?Keyboard? Ever?

The only part of the Sanwa Keydex iPad stand that won’t melt your eyes due to its sheer ugliness is the keyboard — and that’s because it doesn’t come with one. Instead, you have to supply your own iPad Keyboard Dock. And that’s where the pointlessness of this accessory starts to become clear. To fully [...]

Force Dynamics 401cr test drive (video)

If you're old enough to have spent any time in an arcade, surely at some point you splurged an extra couple of quarters to play a game in a seat that moved a bit, shook a bit, made some feeble attempt at making you feel like you're really in the game. Kid's play, that stuff (quite literally), but just like people don't stop gaming as they get older so too such motion simulation tech doesn't have to stay for kiddies. Enter Force Dynamics and enter the 401cr: a full-bore motion simulator that can not only generate over a G of acceleration but can spin you right 'round as many times as you like. We took it for a quite a few spins indeed, plus more than one crash, and we think you'll want to check them out the video below.

Amazon Prime members now get streaming movies, TV shows

amazon video vod prime
Amazon Prime -- which used to just get you discounted one-day or free two day shipping across the U.S. on all your Amazon purchases -- now includes a pretty nice bonus feature. That's it above: free, on-demand streaming of thousands of TV shows and movies.

Sure, the selection is pretty small compared to what services like Hulu and Netflix offer, but this is a pretty nice freebies to toss at Amazon Prime customers. Or is Amazon Prime now a nice freebie to toss as streaming video customers? Either way, if you're a U.S. resident you can sign up for a one-month trial at no charge to see if Amazon's on-demand video offering floats your boat. Existing Amazon Prime customers should already have access.

As The Next Web points out, this is probably just the first step in Amazon's inevitable march toward a full-blown video on demand service. We're curious to see how things will progress from here.

BufferZone Pro sandboxing software now a totally free download

trustware bufferzone pro free download
Trustware's BufferZone was an early entrant into the desktop sandboxing arena. Sandboxing, of course, is the security-by-isolation system which has since been built into apps like Google Chrome and Adobe Reader X. Recently, Trustware launched a promotion and gave away BufferZone Pro for free -- and now the company is making the discount permanent. From now on, BufferZone Pro will be freeware.

But, wait -- BufferZone still doesn't support x64, and maybe you're thinking that there will be a paid version once a 64-bit Windows version arrives. Not so, Trustware's Efrat Schneider told me in an email: "The product will continue to be free," he replied.

If you're looking for a free way to tighten up security on your Windows system, BufferZone is an excellent app for the job. We'll let you know when the 64-bit version becomes available.

10+ great add-ons that only work with Firefox 4

Along with the ability to be restartless, Firefox 4 add-ons also have an entirely new interface to manipulate! There's a new add-on bar at the bottom of the screen, which replaces Firefox 3's status bar -- and then there's that infernal orange button that Mozilla, in its infinite wisdom, has made completely immovable.

There are other new features, too, like app tabs -- wouldn't it be nice to double click a tab, rather than having to fumble around with the right mouse button? And how about some visual notifications in those app tabs, too? Then there's the add-on that lets you set your tab width as narrow (or as wide!) as you like.

Finally, don't forget the handful of Firefox 4-only add-ons from Mozilla Labs that make the browser perform a lot like Chrome...

Apple tests anti-jailbreak code in iBooks, new PwnageTool circumvents it

Apple, it seems, may be trying out some anti-jailbreak code in its iBooks e-book reader app. The app intentionally tries to run an some unsigned executable code every time you try to open a book -- and if it runs, iBooks knows the device is jailbroken and refuses to open your e-books.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for Apple), the iPhone Dev-Team has released a new version of the PwnageTool jailbreak that incorporates the Chronic Dev Team's 'feedface' iOS 4.2.1 untether and circumvents Apple's crippling code.

Apple's intentional hijacking of iBooks is an interesting move, but given its less-than-amiable stance on jailbreaking it's surprising that it's taken this long to actually implement anti-jailbreak mechanisms -- especially after removing the infamous jailbreak API back in December. It now becomes a question of when Apple will insert similar measures into other iOS apps -- and whether they will be a whole lot more destructive than merely blocking e-books. The Age of Bricking may be upon us!
