Windows 8 leaked screenshots show Windows Live integration, taskbar tweaks

Tangible Windows 8 details are beginning to emerge with some screenshots of the OS making the rounds on the Internet. Not much is revealed, but we do get a glimpse at a couple interesting changes.

For starters, taskbar progress indicator support has been expanded to other built-in Windows functions, like hardware installation. Windows Live integration is evolving, too -- you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live ID and have your avatar set to your local Windows profile picture. This also hints at further integration with the cloud.

There's also a lot of noise being made about an eight-minute Windows 8 install process, though if you've loaded Windows 7 from a bootable SATA hard drive onto a system you've already seen pretty similar speeds (and that's what the tester used, not a DVD). The post also refers to a factory restore function, which would roll back your Windows 8 installation back to its day-one glory in about two minutes.

It's also clear that excited Windows 8 leakers aren't paying any attention to Microsoft's not-so-subtle wallpaper. We're not entirely sad about that.

Behold Corsair's Force GT SSD -- flaming red shell and 500 MB/s read and write speeds

Feast your eyes upon the latest and greatest SSD from Corsair, the Force GT. Aside from its flaming red façade, the Force GT also promises snappy 520 MB/sec read and 500 MB/sec write speeds thanks to its SandForce SF-2000 controller -- nearly twice as fast as the company's previous SandForce drives. The 240GB SSD will officially be unveiled at CeBIT 2011 (which ends tomorrow), but we thought you'd like to see this ruby-red speed demon a little early. Enjoy.

Mozilla F1 adds bit.ly account support, improves security

firefox 4 f1 sharing
After having just received a slimmer, vertical interface, the F1 sharing add-on for Firefox 4 has received another minor bump from the team at Mozilla Messaging. This time, F1 has added support for bit.ly accounts -- enabling you to track statistics for your shares alongside your other bit.ly links.

F1 also now offers better security out-of-the-box by storing OAuth information in the browser. Autocomplete has also been improved, and Linux users should now be able to utilize the dropdowns in F1 -- which is kind of important if you want to post to a group Facebook wall or send a direct message on Twitter.

10+ great add-ons that only work with Firefox 4

Along with the ability to be restartless, Firefox 4 add-ons also have an entirely new interface to manipulate! There's a new add-on bar at the bottom of the screen, which replaces Firefox 3's status bar -- and then there's that infernal orange button that Mozilla, in its infinite wisdom, has made completely immovable.

There are other new features, too, like app tabs -- wouldn't it be nice to double click a tab, rather than having to fumble around with the right mouse button? And how about some visual notifications in those app tabs, too? Then there's the add-on that lets you set your tab width as narrow (or as wide!) as you like.

Finally, don't forget the handful of Firefox 4-only add-ons from Mozilla Labs that make the browser perform a lot like Chrome...

Android apps purchased from Amazon will work on multiple devices, use Amazon DRM

Amazon app store

Android applications purchased in Amazon's app store (which may finally go live to consumers any time now) will use Amazon's special sauce of digital locker/digital rights management to help combat piracy. Amazon spells it out in its developer blog:

Customers who purchase an app will retain an entitlement to their app even if they decide to replace their current Android device and/or purchase new devices, as long as the new devices meet the installation requirements of the app. This provides insurance to customers that their purchased apps will be available for use on all supported devices, even if the customer has uninstalled or otherwise removed those apps in the past.

The digital locker service combined with a robust Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution not only make managing apps easier for customers, they also address one of the biggest concerns developers have: unauthorized copying and distribution. An authorized user can now install your app on any of their supported devices; however, if you chose to apply DRM on your app at submission time, your app will not run on unauthorized devices.

Any app that has Amazon DRM applied to it will require users to have installed and signed-in to the Amazon Appstore client to access the app. When an app is accessed by the user, it will verify with the Amazon Appstore device service as to whether the user has an entitlement to the app. If the user does not sign in or does not have an entitlement to that app, then the app will not be usable. However, any user can gain an entitlement by purchasing the app through Amazon.

The tl;dr version: You can use apps purchased from Amazon on multiple devices just fine; you'll just need Amazon's app store app installed for them to work. It's not nearly as scary as some would have you believe, and it's an extra cushion for developers. [Amazon Developer Blog]

Samsung reconsidering Galaxy Tab 10.1 price after iPad 2 announcement

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10-inch with Honeycomb

Apple's recently-announced iPad 2 will provide some strong competition to the current crop of Honeycomb tablets, and it looks like manufacturers are already taking note of the threat posed by Apple's latest tablet.

Speaking to a Korean news agency, Samsung executive Lee Don-joo acknowledged that the iPad 2's low price point and thinner chassis were the biggest obstacles facing the company as it prepares to launch its 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab. In future products Lee says Samsung "will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," likely referring to the 10.1-inch Tab's additional heft compared to the new iPad.

Most interestingly though, Lee adds that Sammy may be reconsidering the launch price for its new tablet, saying "the 10-inch (tablet) was to be priced higher than the 7-inch (tablet) but we will have to think that over." The 7-inch Galaxy Tab currently retails at around $500, the same as the cheapest iPad 2. A 10.1-inch Honeycomb-powered Galaxy Tab at this price point would be a tantalizing prospect, if Samsung is willing to be as competitive with its pricing as Lee's comments would suggest. [Yonhap News Agency]

Speed up Google Chrome by enabling hardware acceleration and pre-rendering

Chrome logoWe've spent a lot of time jabbering on and on and on about hardware acceleration in the next generation of Web browsers.

The problem, however, is that no stable browsers have it turned on by default. Unless you're running Firefox 4 beta or Internet Explorer 9 RC, you're probably not enjoying hardware acceleration. Heck, our latest poll shows that almost 50% of Download Squad readers run Chrome, anyway!

Turning hardware acceleration on in Chrome 9, 10 and 11 (stable, beta and canary) is easy, and it can significantly speed up surfing on low-powered devices, like laptops -- or if you're the kind of person who has 30+ tabs open on your desktop PC. We'll show you how to turn on pre-rendering, too, which provides another nice speed boost.

Add a keyboard shortcut to a Chrome bookmark or bookmarklet

Add a keyboard shortcut to a bookmark in Chrome 9
It occurred to us, after writing yesterday's list of Chrome keyboard shortcuts, that there was one glaring omission: bookmark shortcuts.

Not only does the Bookmark Bar take up valuable real estate, but no one really wants to click through folders of bookmarks to find what you're looking for.

Now, Firefox has 'Smart bookmarks', which lets you add a keyword to a bookmark. Chrome, however, only lets you assign keywords (and thus keyboard shortcuts) to search engines.

Fortunately, with a little bit of hacking, that doesn't matter.

BTDigg, the first DHT 'trackerless' decentralized torrent search engine

BTDigg DHT search
Despite DHT being included in major BitTorrent clients for years, the very first 'trackerless' torrent search engine has only just launched: BTDigg.

DHT is a decentralized and distributed technology that enables users to download files from nearby peers without contacting a central tracker. BTDigg crawls the massive DHT network, hopping from peer to peer, and slowly builds up an index of every torrent in existence -- in theory, anyway.

The exciting thing about BTDigg is that you now don't have to upload a torrent to a tracker or indexer to share something. BTDigg will eventually stumble across your shared files and index them. Of course, the irony is that BTDigg centralizes the decentralized DHT network, defeating any of its privacy and security benefits.

The main thing holding BTDigg back, though, is a truly atrocious interface and almost complete lack of functionality. It's green and orange, presumably in an attempt to look like old monochrome monitors. The search algorithm itself is awful -- and there's absolutely no way to refine your search, either. A search for "Glee EZTV" brought up a seemingly random and unchronological listing of episodes -- with lots of multiple results, too!

Still, it's a fun proof of concept. We're sure that future versions will be better...

Confirmed: AOL?s Patch Buys Hyperlocal News Site Outside. In

AOL's Patch has acquired hyperlocal news aggregator Outside. In, we've confirmed with Patch's president Warren Webster. It's unclear what the terms of the deal are but Business Insider reported earlier that the acquisition is valued at less than $10 million. Outside. In has raised $14.4 million in funding to date. Webster tells us that Outside. In, which has a previous relationship with AOL, will be integrated with Patch, the company's hyperlocal news platform. The New York-based Outside. In is a local news aggregator aimed at bringing together all the hyperlocal news around a given location. Via its search portal, you simply enter your zipcode, neighborhood or address and the site will surface the most relevant news in your particular area. Outside. In focuses on sourcing information and news from local bloggers as opposed to large publications.

Japanese researchers weave capacitive touch into large-area textiles, want to make them wearable (video)

Conductive fibers, yo, they're the future. Japan's AIST is back with yet another quirky idea, this time integrating capacitive touch sensors into 1-micron thick nylon fibers. The results is a big old cloth that can sense your loving touch and inform nearby computers of what you're up to. Initial uses envisioned by the research outfit include implementation in hospitals to monitor bedridden patients, but the ultimate goal is to make this extra-sensitive array a wearable accoutrement. Wouldn't that be lovely?

(Founder Stories) Dennis Crowley: ?The Hard Part Is Building The Machine That Builds The Product?

What's the hardest part of building a hot startup? In Part II of his Founder Stories interview, Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley tells Chris Dixon it's not building the product, it's building the company that builds the product. The product is easy. Crowley and his team have been thinking about the product for years. "The hard part is building the machine that builds the product," he says. Foursquare has grown from 2 to 50 people, moved into bigger offices, and had to build a backend system that can support millions of users. But all of that was behind the scenes. "This is our year to build all the stuff we have been thinking about," he declares.

iDisplay for Android review: turn your smartphone or tablet into a 2nd or 3rd desktop display

iDisplay screen extending for Android
When we first heard about iDisplay, there was something about it that piqued our curiosity. It extends your desktop onto another screen -- your Android or iOS device, to be exact -- and while that sounds cool, its actual usefulness isn't immediately apparent.

All you have to do is install the app on your Android device (2.1 or newer), run the server program on your Windows or Mac PC, and then connect from your phone. Voila! An extended desktop.

In theory, it sounds as easy as pie -- and we'd be lying if we said the concept of extending your screen to your mobile device didn't appeal to our the inner nerd -- but in practice, iDisplay for Android is an untamed beast that doesn't really do what it's meant to do.

Bricked phones force Microsoft to block WP7 update for Samsung devices

Microsoft pulls WP7 update from Samsung phones
Microsoft has "identified a a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process" and summarily blocked Samsung WP7 phones from receiving the new patch.

As we reported yesterday, the new update, which was meant to streamline future updates, bricked some Samsung Omnia phones. Microsoft has identified the issue, however, and is working quickly to push the update back out. It's not yet known whether the update will fix the bricked devices, though -- presumably, those unfortunate users may have to send their phone back to Microsoft or Samsung for a refund.

New Chrome OS update finally fixes the Cr-48's touchpad issues

Google's Chrome OS, and thus the Cr-48, has seen a lot of updates and big fixes since we took a hard look at it back in December, but the wonky touchpad, which we seriously struggled with, hasn't exactly seen much love. That is, until today. The most recent Chrome OS update, which now brings it to version 0.10.156.46, includes new "trackpad and sensitivity settings," and it definitely makes a world of difference. We updated ours just a couple of moments ago and lots of the issues -- namely the jumpy cursor and the flaky scrolling -- have been mended. Thanks to the fresh software, we had a much easier time highlighting text and scrolling down the length of this very website. That said, the touchpad still isn't as responsive as what you get with Apple's MacBooks or Synaptics ClickPad Series 3, and that's because the physical hardware is based on Synaptics' older generation profile sensing technology rather than its newer image sensing panel. Either way, the new software update makes the Cr-48 a lot less frustrating to navigate. Google's also rolled in some new power optimizations, screen indicators, and GChat improvements -- go on and try it out for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments.
