AppSumo Supercharge OS X bundle giveaway

Hopefully you read our review of the AppSumo Supercharge OS X bundle over the weekend. Sam has now been playing with the bundle for a few days -- in fact, the only sound emanating from his padded room in the Download Squad bunker is the gentle, rhythmic chanting of sumo, sumo, sumo -- and at the bargain price of $14, he really can't see a reason to not buy the bundle.

Unless, of course, you win our giveaway! We have 10 copies of the excellent AppSumo Supercharge OS X bundle to give away. You can enter the giveaway by simply leaving a comment. Full terms and conditions follow after the break.

Bear in mind, if you really want the bundle, you only have 36 hours left to buy it. You can still enter the giveaway -- and if you win, you can give your license keys to friends and family!

Microsoft Sold 8 Million Kinects In 60 Days

Microsoft earnings just got released 10 minutes before market close, and aside from growing revenues 5% in the 2nd quarter to $19.95 Billion, their slides reveal some interesting numbers on their entertainment and gaming unit, mainly that they sold 8 million Kinects in the two months since launch. Said Peter Klien about the Kinect's success, ?We are enthusiastic about the consumer response to our holiday lineup of products, including the launch of Kinect. The 8 million units of Kinect sensors sold in just 60 days far exceeded our expectations. The pace of business spending, combined with strong consumer demand, led to another quarter of operating margin expansion and solid earnings per share growth.?

How Can I Illustrate The Dystopian Hellscape Presaged By Demand?s IPO?

It happens, sometimes. I have what I think would be a fun idea for a joke, only to discover - often half-way through writing it - that someone else has already beaten me to the punch(line). Today, for example, I wanted to write something about Demand Media's IPO. Given the hideously cynical nature of their business, the dreck that passes for their content, the appallingly low rates paid to their writers (who have - apparently - created $1.5bn worth of value) and now a plagiarism scandal (wait - they don't even write their own dreck?), it's clear that Demand is a hideous company. In fact it's absolutely no exaggeration whatsoever to say that buying shares in them is the web content equivalent of buying stock in Nestle Africa or stocking up on Fanta in the 1940s. I mean, yes, there's clearly money to be made, but I wouldn't want that kind of karma. Still, the fact remains that - as I wrote in my Sunday column last week - Demand's brand of SEO horseshit represents the future of web content. And with that in mind, I thought it might be a lark to put together a mock up of what that particular dystopian hellscape might look like. Say, the front page of NYTimes.com, as written by Demand. Imagine, then, my disappointment on discovering that Danny Sullivan has beaten me to it.

HTML5 now has an official logo, looks oddly reminiscent of Superman's leotard

HTML5 shield logo
In a rather curious development, HTML5 has garnered enough celebrity to warrant its own official logo. Its heraldic and angular appearance obviously represents HTML5's role as the resilient vanguard of the open Web -- or, on second thoughts, it may simply be a reference to Superman's S shield.

Neither HTML4, HTML3, or indeed any version of HTML, has ever had its own logo before. There is an ancient 'HTML square', but as that dates to before 1995, it probably accompanied HTML2 and appeared on just a handful of websites.

The HTML5 logo website itself is, rather fittingly, a beautiful bastion of pure semantic goodness. Gone is the awful Web 2.0 'feedback' tab, with a beautiful 'Nav' menu sitting its place. There are also great descriptions for each of HTML5's major new features and some nice 'badge designers' -- in case you want to put the HTML5 logo on your site.

Microsoft invites PS3 jailbreak dev to take a crack at Windows Phone 7

20-something firmware magician GeoHot (George Hotz) has already been sued by Sony for jailbreaking the PlayStation 3, and caused a major stir in the iPhone dev community when he released limera1n. So what next for the ambitious young hacker? How about taking a stab at Windows Phone 7?

The invitation has been handed out, with WP7 lead Brandon Watson offering to ship Hotz a device so that he can give it a go. Microsoft, of course, has said that it fully supports "official homebrew" development for WP7 and met recently with the Chevron WP7 team to discuss community and development-related issues.

The exploit used by Chevron WP7 is due to be patched in the January update for Windows Phone 7, so GeoHot will need to look elsewhere. Still, he's done it twice before, so we wouldn't be at all surprised if he can do it again.

Ford's intelligent vehicles communicate wirelessly, shoot hula hoops out of tailpipes (video)

Ford's intelligent vehicles communicate wirelessly, shoot hula hoops out of tailpipes (video)
Imagine how many accidents could be avoided if we all had perfect X-Ray vision -- assuming, of course, that everyone could refrain from being distracted by all the naked pedestrians. Drivers would never be surprised by rapidly slowing traffic, cars broken down around blind curves, or autos zooming into blind spots. No matter how many ads we respond to in the back of Mad Magazine we'll never have that, but Ford has an alternative with its Intelligent Vehicle Research: cars that simply rely on GPS and a wireless data connection to beam their location and speed to each other.

Autos alert their drivers when a car at the front of a convoy is rapidly decelerating or when there's a broken down rig right around the next bend. Interestingly the tech is using WiFi, not cellular data, so range is somewhat limited, but still far enough to warn drivers with blinking lights or trigger an automatic-braking system. It's all demonstrated in the video after the break and, while there are no crazy platooning stunts like Volvo recently showed off, we have to figure that's coming in version 2.0.

Kinect 3D Viewer now available in Mac App Store, but don't get too excited

Kinect 3D Viewer
The first Kinect app has just popped up in the Mac App Store, but unfortunately it does exactly what its name suggests. Kinect 3D Viewer lets you... view the output from the Kinect depth-sensing camera... in 3D!

It actually has two output options: you can either see a 3D point cloud, which excellently shows off the resolution of depth detection, or you can "view yourself in 3D", which looks very similar to the proof-of-concept Linux/Kinect hacks that we saw in November. There's no information about how the Kinect integration was achieved, but presumably the developers used a Mac port of libfreenect.

Hopefully there will be a follow-up app that actually does something -- but having said that, how many Mac users with Xbox 360s can there possibly be?

With Ubuntu's shift to Qt in 11.10, an attack on the mobile sector must be imminent

Ubuntu tablet
Qt, come the end of 2011, is to become a standard component of Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu currently, and in the upcoming 11.04 Natty Narwhal distribution, uses Gtk+, a competing toolkit maintained by the GNOME Foundation.

When Canonical announced Ubuntu's shift away from the GNOME desktop manager in 11.04, the switch to Qt was almost a foregone conclusion; GNOME requires Gtk+, but Unity doesn't -- so why stick around? A better question to ask, though, is why Qt?

The odd, but overwhelmingly likely truth seems to be that Ubuntu is moving into the mobile sector. Unity was originally designed as a netbook or small-screen interface; and there's no denying that Unity 2D, without its shiny bells and whistles, is designed for very low-powered devices, like cheap tablets and smartphones.

Qt

That's where Qt enters the equation: Qt is the application framework used on Nokia's Symbian and Maemo phones. Qt is also fully cross-platform, with support for Windows, Mac and Linux. With Qt, developers could write a single program for Ubuntu, and have it run on desktops, laptops, tablets, and even smartphones.

But why oh why does Canonical even want to go into the mobile market? Has someone at the top lost their marbles?

BlueGriffon: a cross-platform WYSIWYG HTML5 and CSS3 editor based on Firefox 4

If you want to get in on the HTML5 and CSS3 revolution, and would prefer some training wheels while you learn all of the new HTML tags and CSS transitions and transforms, look no further than BlueGriffon. It's free, open-source, and runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

BlueGriffon is built upon a recent version of Firefox 4. It uses the same Gecko page layout engine -- and in fact, lots of the UI elements look like they've come straight from Firefox 4. There are even add-ons to provide extra functionality, but they'll cost you 30 euros (about $40).

As far as actual usability goes, BlueGriffon is pretty good. The UI isn't exactly easy to use (but these things rarely are), but source editor is good -- and there's a built-in SVG creator that works well. You have access to all of the HTML5 tag types and CSS3 selectors, but not through the right-click context menu, which is annoying. The primary feature of BlueGriffon has to be the ability to see the effect of CSS3 selectors instantly -- or simply as a text editor that has a built-in Firefox 4 preview window.

According to WebUpd8, the nightly builds are the most stable. Also, if you're using Linux, grab the binary installer rather than the .deb, which apparently has some issues. The Windows build crashed quite a few times during my tests, too.

HTC phone prototype spied on subway

HTC Prototype

A note to you clandestine types everywhere: If you pull an unannounced, unreleased phone out of your pocket on the subway, someone's going to take a picture of it. Such is the case with this HTC device (note the telltale serial number on the bottom), which was spied in a Taipei subway. It's clearly buttonless and appears to have a front-facing camera and shares some lines of the Thunderbolt on Verizon, but this is obviously a different device.

Will we see it in a couple week at Mobile World Congress? Only one way to find out. One more pic's after the break. [Engadget]

Korean researchers demonstrate LTE-Advanced in a bitching RV, score 600Mbps downloads
We're just giddy like kids on the way to Disney World at the prospect of LTE and WiMAX sweeping like wildfire across the country, yet someone always has to come along and be a downer by showing off something even cooler. Those kids are the players at Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, the same folks who brought us a Body Area Network back in 2006 and this creepy looking koala. Now they're working on LTE-Advanced, the real true 4G that delivers 600Mbps downloads. That's six times what you can ever hope to expect from LTE and 40 times faster than 3G -- enough to download a 700MB file in 9.3 seconds or stream 3D HD footage on the go, a feat those crazy cats did in their rolling man cave shown above. Sadly we have no pictures of the thing on the outside, but we're seeing antennas. Lots of antennas.

[Thanks, Andy]

Ubuntu 11.04 switches to LibreOffice in latest daily builds

Back in September 2010, when Google, Novell and others announced the LibreOffice fork of OpenOffice, Canonical frontman Mark Shuttleworth said "The Ubuntu Project will be pleased to ship LibreOffice from The Document Foundation in future releases." In recent 11.04 Natty Narwhal daily builds, the change has finally taken place.

Download yourself a new Ubuntu 11.04 daily build .ISO, and you'll have LibreOffice installed from the get-go -- no PPA required. Natty is currently in the early stages, of course, so expect a few bumps in the road if you decide to take it for a test drive.

'LA Noire': Latest Rockstar Epic Gets the Sam Spade Treatment

When it comes to controversial, violent video games, Rockstar is king. "Grand Theft Auto" put the company on the map, and it hasn't looked back since. It has become one of the most talked-about publishers in the industry and continues to push the envelope. But its latest game, while still containing a lot of sex and violence, puts players in a very different perspective.
