Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive

OS X Lion Time Machine local snapshots
9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.

GoToMyPC app for iPad lets you access remote computers on-the-go

Popular remote computing tool GoToMyPC has launched an iPad app, joining competitors like TeamViewer HD in the App Store. You'll need the host program installed on any computers you wish to access, and an account is also required (but GoToMyPC does offer a free a 30-day trial).

Fire up the app on your iPad, and you're presented with a list of computers you've previously enabled for remote access. Connections via Wi-Fi and 3G are both supported, and all communication is 128-bit AES encrypted. GoToMyPC also features touch and gesture controls, which, of course, you'd expect from an iPad app.

Check out the video after the break to see the iPad-friendly GoToMyPC app in action!

Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes it easy to pin special folders

Pinning programs, folders, and even frequently used documents to your Windows 7 taskbar can be a real time-saver. Certain folders, however, aren't so easy to add -- especially if you want them right on the taskbar and not buried in the Explorer jump list.

Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes pinning everything from your downloads folder to the control panel to network connections as easy as ticking a checkbox. Just download Pinner from Door2Windows, extract the files, and right-click the executable to run it as Administrator. The app also allows you to unpin existing items, and you can even integrate Pinner into your context menu if you like.

If you want to add Control Panel to your taskbar, we still recommend using the method we showed you -- pinning it with Pinner won't give you a jump list to utilize.

Switched On: Back from the Mac

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
Last week's Switched On discussed Nokia's quest to help Microsoft create a third mobile ecosystem alongside those of Apple and Google. That word - ecosystem - has clearly passed into the pantheon of buzzwords, leveraging many synergies from purpose-built paradigms. And yet, building and maintaining ecosystems is something few companies really understand. True technology ecosystems are more than just successful platforms or throwing many products together simply because they are owned by the same company. They are characterized by strategically implemented nurturing.

One concept that Apple seems to have adapted from natural ecosystems is the concept of the water cycle you probably learned about in grade school. Apple turns up the heat on the life-sustaining water of innovation that passes between the well-grounded Mac market and the soaring growth of the iOS market. Apple alluded to this cycle in its Back to the Mac event. After inheriting many technologies from Mac OS X, iOS began offering Mac OS X launch screens, full-screen apps, app resuming, and document autosaving. This week's announcements, though, show that the cycle may soon be heading again in the other direction as Apple showed off two Mac technologies that may well wind up strengthening the iOS ecosystem.

Legit Sites Could Get Caught in Google's Content Farm Crosshairs

Google on Thursday began using a new algorithm to rid its top search results of what it described as low-quality websites. This will reduce the rankings for sites that are low value-add for users, ones that copy content from other websites, or sites that just aren't very useful. Simultaneously, the algorithm will improve the rankings for high-quality sites.

The Haves and Have-Nots: The True Story of a Reader Suddenly De-Invited from TED

I was determined never to write another negative post about TED. Really. I feel like my views on the conference's smug-tendencies have been well-stated. And, as I said in this article in Fast Company, I think the TED Fellows program and the TEDx program have gone a long way towards fulfilling the stated mission of TED, doing actual outreach into places the conference long professed to care about. Beyond that, I'm just hearing of a lot of Valley people who aren't going anymore after the move to Long Beach, making the conference less of an annual to-do for the tech community. But then I got this email below, and all the reasons I wrote the original BusinessWeek column came flooding back. If TED would just own up to being about making the wealthy, famous and powerful feel comfortable--like other clubby, high level affairs like Sun Valley or the World Economic Forum-- I wouldn't have an issue with it. Business conferences have good reasons to be elitist; deals are getting done and high-level conversations need to be private sometimes. But when credentials are revoked at the last minute based purely on the whim of a more important member of the TED community, the inner workings are just too much like a country club for an organization whose stellar content is all about pluralism and uplift. It's the Sarah Silverman incident all over again. Oh you made one of the more important people feel uncomfortable? Then you're out of here.

New Google navigation bar is not +1: it's for managing your online identity

Google's privacy navigation bar
Google's new cross-site navigation bar, which began rolling out last week, is actually a new measure to improve your surfing privacy, and not the 'Google +1' social layer that we've been anticipating.

Basically, the bar elucidates the three 'states' in which you can use Google's services. First this is 'Unidentified,' which is where Google only knows your IP address, tracks you with a cookie, but doesn't know your name; then there's 'Psuedonymous,' which is how most of us currently use Google -- and finally there's 'Identified,' which is where your real life identity is assured.

Interestingly, Google also answers a question we've always wondered about: when you're logged out, you are effectively anonymous -- even if your IP address matches one of your Google accounts, your surfing habits are still kept separate.

The navigation bar, then, is simply a way of making sure you always know just how private (or public) your actions are. It's worth noting that the nav bar might still become a part of the upcoming '+1' social layer -- but for the time being, we can only guess at how they might be combined.

10+ Chrome extensions and Web apps for new users

Chrome extensions logoIt might only be a couple of years old and its extension interface might not be quite as powerful as Firefox's, but in terms of developers, big-name publishers, and sheer numbers, Chrome already has a very healthy ecosystem of add-ons.

When you factor in Chrome's exclusive selection of Web apps, it's even possible to say that Chrome has a wider variety of extensions -- or at least until Mozilla launches its Open Web Apps later in the year.

Still, as always, the problem with add-ons is finding the right ones. You have thousands of add-ons to choose from, and only a handful that are actually worth using. First-time users haven't got a snowball's chance -- unless they read this list of must-have extensions!

But this list of extensions is for converts, too. With massive defections from Internet Explorer and Firefox, Chrome has grown from just a few million users in 2009 to over 120 million at the start of 2011. Firefox users will be especially pleased to find almost every add-on has a comparable extension -- and IE users... well, they'll just be glad to have any extensions at all.

Whether you are looking for helpers or shortcuts, or full-blown Web apps, you will be pleasantly surprised with the variety and power of Chrome's extensions.

Internet Explorer 9's most useful keyboard shortcuts

Microsoft has been at pains to point out just how slimline the IE9 interface is -- it's a whole six pixels more svelte than Chrome! -- but its minimalistic sparseness comes at a price: you need a magnifying glass to see the buttons, and almost everything is hidden behind at least two or three mouse clicks.

Fortunately, there's plenty of keyboard shortcuts:
  • Alt+C -- pop open the Favorites/Feeds/History window
  • Alt+X -- pop open the Tools (Cog icon) menu
  • Alt+Left/Right -- move back/forward through your history
  • Ctrl+L -- sets your keyboard focus to the One Bar (address bar), and selects the current URL (ripe for Ctrl+C!)
  • Ctrl+Shift+L -- if you have a URL in your clipboard, this shortcut loads it; if you have a text string in your clipboard, it searches your default search engine for it (very cool)
  • Ctrl+D -- add the current page to your Favorites (bookmarks)
  • Ctrl+B -- organize your Favorites
  • Ctrl+J -- opens the Download Manager
  • Ctrl+K -- duplicates your current tab
  • Ctrl+Alt+P -- pop open an InPrivate Browsing window
  • Alt+N -- give focus to the new bottom-hugging Notification bar (then Enter for the first button, or Esc to dismiss it)
  • F12 -- open the (fantastic) developer console (and once it's open, and has focus, Alt+7/8/9/Q changes the rendering mode)
All of the usual key combos work, obviously: Ctrl+T, Ctrl+W, Ctrl+N, Ctrl +, Ctrl -, and so on.

Microsoft announces budget-friendly Lifecam HD-3000 webcam, Comfort and Express mice
Digging the 1080p LifeCam Studio but don't feel like spending $100? Or, maybe you don't need all those p's? Microsoft has, for you and you alone, announced the new LifeCam HD-3000. It tops out at 720p but retails for a more palatable $39.95. Also newly announced is a trio of mice, first and most exciting being the $19.95 Express Mouse (above) which, according to Microsoft, has both the looks and the moves. We're not really sure what that means, but it is kind of funky looking with the offset cord your choice of six colors ranging from "Hibiscus Red" to "Dahlia Pink." For those who'd rather stick with something less-flowery there's the Comfort Mouse 3000 for the same price, similar features in a design less likely to stand out in the conference room. Or, cough up another $10 for the $29.95 Comfort Mouse 6000, pictured below. It gives up ambidextrous pretenses in favor of a more form-fitting shape and five whole buttons. Can you handle that many buttons? Yeah, you totally can.

HTC Thunderbolt said to have terrible battery life, might explain delay?

We're hearing from... well, let's call them "people familiar with the matter" that HTC's Thunderbolt -- a phone that's supposed to be Verizon's first with LTE -- is experiencing positively miserable battery life that's making it difficult for testers to avoid carrying a second phone around as a backup. How bad? Two to three hours from full to empty in some cases. Of course, we wouldn't be surprised if battery life was really bad with the LTE radio left on -- the EVO 4G wasn't much different at launch with WiMAX lit up -- but the word on the street is that the power situation is largely responsible for the delays we've been seeing. In fact, our source tells us the phone is currently working on its sixth retail delay at the moment. More on this situation as we get it.

Update: We've just heard from another trusted tipster that there's definitely a new firmware in the works to address battery life and signal issues (which -- you guessed it -- are interrelated). Thanks, HTC Kid!

Square Connect SQ Blaster and SQ Remote review: Home automation, unified

Having already taken our first feverish steps down the path of an automated home, we figured it was time to try and integrate the home entertainment system with the household lighting. Our goal coming into this review was to sit down on the sofa and hit a single button on an old, unused iPhone 3G to automatically dim the lights, fire up the 5.1 sound, flip on the media streamer, and ignite the projector. To accomplish this seemingly monumental task we installed a WiFi-enabled SQ Blaster in the TV cabinet, a puck-shaped IR blaster from Square Connect that communicates with MiOS home control gateways like Mi Casa Verde's Vera. So, did we succeed? Did we achieve the ultimate in home-owner nerdvana? You'd better believe it. Read on to find out how.

Researchers debut one-cubic-millimeter computer, want to stick it in your eye

This as-of-yet-unnamed mini computer was fashioned as an implantable eye pressure monitor for glaucoma patients, but its creators envision a future where we're all crawling with the little buggers. Taking up just over one cubic millimeter of space, the thing stuffs a pressure sensor, memory, thin-film battery, solar cell, wireless radio, and low-power microprocessor all into one very small translucent container. The processor behind this little guy uses an "extreme" sleep mode to keep it napping at 15-minute intervals and sucking up 5.3 nanowatts while awake, and its battery runs off 10 hours of indoor light or one and a half hours of sun beams. Using the sensor to measure eye pressure and the radio to communicate with an external reader, the system will continuously track the progress of glaucoma, without those pesky contacts. Of course, the mad scientists behind it look forward to a day when the tiny device will do much more, with each of us toting hundreds of the computer implants all over our bodies -- looks like a bright future for cyborgdom.

Internet Explorer 9 pinned sites: how they work, and the best examples on the Web

If, by some weird quirk of fate, you missed the big news yesterday: Internet Explorer 9 RC is now available to download. If you've read our complete guide you'll know about one of IE9's neatest features: pinned websites.

In essence, it takes the Firefox and Chrome idea of pinned app tabs and goes a few steps further by actually integrating with the operating system. To pin a site, simply visit it in IE9, then drag the tab down to the Windows taskbar. Your tab will quickly close and re-open in a new (color-coded!) window.

Pinned sites can do three very awesome things: they can provide notifications, such as new messages; you can right click the pinned icon to access a jump list to various parts of the site (see right); and finally, pinned sites can even have thumbnail toolbars -- you can control a media player, from a pinned site!

The thing is, though, a website has to be explicitly coded to provide these features -- and while Microsoft has done a good job of getting major Web service providers to add the IE9-specific meta tags, it will be some months before every site has IE9's special pinned site magic.

After the break, we have a comprehensive list of the best examples of IE9 pinned sites from across the Web. Make sure you've downloaded and installed IE9 before you continue, too.

Let?s Calm Down On The Google-ITA Deal

This guest post is written by Daniel A. Crane, who is Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. He is an expert in antitrust law. Google?s proposed acquisition of ITA Software, which provides a management system for airfare pricing and shopping services, has become ground zero for the burgeoning coalition of interests intent on stopping Google?s perceived dominance in Internet search. The Justice Department is reviewing the deal and is reportedly preparing to block it if Google does not agree to substantial concessions. Meanwhile, an anti-Google coalition has made stopping the acquisition its Maginot line. The ?FairSearch? coalition, consisting of a host of anti-Google forces including Microsoft, TripAdvisor, Expedia, Kayak, and Hotwire, presents the ITA deal as Exhibit A on its website, warning that the deal will bring ?consumers higher prices and less choice in travel.? These claims are overblown. Google?s competitors naturally fear Google?s emergence as a formidable rival in travel search, but that is hardly a reason to block the transaction. Indeed, it?s a reason to approve the deal. The most likely scenario is that Google?s acquisition of ITA would allow Google a quick and efficient entry point into travel search that would expand consumer options and increase rather than decrease competition.

Speed up Internet Explorer 9 with the Add-on Performance Advisor

Did you know that Internet Explorer 9 has add-ons? Like, real, experience-altering extensions? Head on over to the IE Add-ons Gallery and take a gander. Marvel at how the most popular add-on in the U.K. has a mind-blowing 18 ratings.

Truth be told, there isn't a whole lot to choose from, but if you do end up using a few add-ons or toolbars, you may run into the Add-on Performance Advisor. If any add-on takes too long to load, you'll see a notification at the bottom of your window (see above) -- and if you click through, you'll be shown a list of all your add-ons and how long they take to load (see right). It's just a matter of clicking Disable on any add-ons that are bogging down your surfing, and away you go!

From the same window you can also select the threshold for slow add-ons (but the default of 0.2 seconds is fine).

If you just want to see the general performance of your add-ons and toolbars, click Cog > Manage add-ons and every add-on's load time can be seen.

[Admittedly, a better question to ask at the start would've been 'does IE9 have any useful add-ons?' but that was beyond the scope of this post.]

New Google navigation bar is not +1: it's for managing your online identity originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 10:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

AVG LiveKive to launch as Dropbox alternative

When you think of AVG, you probably think antivirus -- probably because it has sat near the top of Download.com's list of most downloaded apps for years. AVG has been tapped by tens of millions of users for malware protection, and the company now hopes those same people will turn to it for synchronized cloud storage.

Called AVG LiveKive, the new service will launch in beta form next week -- competing against apps like Dropbox, SugarSync, and SpiderOak. Users will get 5GB of storage for free and while we assume there will be paid options as well, AVG hasn't posted any details yet.

While AVG's post says users will be able to access LiveKive cloud data from "all their synced devices," it's not clear whether there will be mobile companion apps or if this is strictly a desktop app. AVG does already offer antivirus and backup apps for Android, so we expect to see LiveKive hit the Market as well.

For more IE9 tips, see our tips index, or read our complete IE9 guide.

Ask DLS: How did your Windows 7 SP1 upgrade go?

windows 7 sp 1 service pack 1
Now that the Windows 7 SP1 download is available to the general public and it's also being pushed via Windows Update, we thought we'd check to see how smooth the upgrade process has been for you.

It wasn't all unicorns and double rainbows here in the Download Squad bunker. One laptop refused to progress beyond 66% complete, even after several retries and reboots. Another workstation was left running the update all weekend, and just hit 98% when we returned to work on Tuesday -- only to fail at 99% and start rolling back the operation.

So tell us, DS readers, how was your experience installing the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 update? Hit the poll after the break!

Nokia will be allowed to customize every part of Windows Phone 7

In a bit of an about-turn, Microsoft will allow Nokia to "customize everything" in Windows Phone 7 in order to both differentiate it from handsets made by current WP7 OEMs, such as HTC and Samsung, and presumably to ensure smooth integration with Nokia's existing services.

Microsoft had, until now, kept a draconian grip on the look and feel of Windows Phone 7. In fact, other than being allowed to customize a couple of tiles on the home screen, OEMs aren't allowed to change anything on WP7! This change not only means that we'll see distinctively unique Nokia-Microsoft phones, but also that Nokia will retain more of its identity than just an embossed logo on its handsets.

The big question, though, is whether this represents an exclusive deal for Nokia, or a complete shift in Microsoft's WP7 strategy. You can be sure, however, that HTC, who was forbidden from installing its Sense UI on its WP7 phones, will be quick to question Microsoft's new stance.

iPad 2 to go carbon fiber. Maybe. (See footnote.)

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has added some carefully hedged speculation about the iPad 2 going carbon fiber to the mix: I could publish things I?m only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don?t, because I?m only half-sure and I?ve only heard about [...]

Clash of the Titans sequel will be another 2D-to-3D conversion, and Inception too?

After a poor response to the first Clash of the Titans movie and its substandard 3D effects, courtesy of a rushed conversion process, you'd think they would never try that again, and you'd be wrong. Director Jonathan Liebesman, fresh off of Battle:LA is helming sequel Wrath of the Titans and says was talked into doing the conversion process again (but shooting with that in mind, Piranha 3D-style) on this flick by a series of demos including, Christopher Nolan's Inception. This is notable both because no 3D re-release has been announced for the visually engrossing flick, but also because Nolan himself has suggested 3D would be a bad choice due to the dimming effect of the glasses. Warner Bros. could only manage to tell Cinematical "At this time, the plans for Inception 3D cannot be confirmed," leaving the possibility of a return alongside Star Wars, Titanic and others to twist in the wind for now.
