Opera Mobile Store, powered by Appia, goes live for Mobile and Mini

It's not the first browser to get its own app store, but the Opera Mobile Store is... well, another app store. The Store has just launched and is powered by Appia, which offers a white-label app store system for carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, as well as some top-tier handset manufacturers.

The Store will appear on Opera Mobile and Opera Mini Speed Dial pages and give users access to paid and free apps. During pre-launch testing, Opera tallied more than 15 million users in 200 countries downloading around 700,000 apps per day.

Visualized: Overturned ink-carrying tractor-trailer paints the town red... literally

What you're looking at in the psychedelic photograph above is the result of an overturned tractor-trailer in Peabody, Massachusetts that was carrying a load of -- you guessed it -- printer ink. Fortunately the spillage isn't believed to cause any environmental damage, but unfortunately you can't just take your empty cartridges down to Peabody for a quick fill-up. No word on how this may affect HP's bottom line, but since the markup on ink is absurd, we're sure they'll have enough dough to cover the loss. Bonus shot after the break.

Arkon Rear Seat Headrest Mount and Custom Fit Protective Holder for Apple iPad Review

Going on car trips with kids can be rough. Hearing ?are we there yet? too many times can make the trip seem endless. BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android and iOS?

bbm android iosBlackBerry owners love BBM, and it's one of the best out-of-the-box messaging apps you'll find on any smartphone platform. According to Boy Genius Report, RIM may finally be preparing to extend BBM beyond its own OS -- releasing Android and iOS versions. The reason for the change of heart could be the spate of very capable and very popular cross-platform BBM alternatives.

While it would certainly be nice to message a handful of my BBM contacts from my Droid Incredible, I can already communicate with those people using other IM clients like Google Talk and Facebook chat. Add in the fact that BGR's sources say that BBM for Android and iOS may lack the ability to share photos, location, and videos, and I start to wonder just how successful such an app would be.

What do you think, DS readers? Is a feature-limited BBM app for your Android or iOS device something you'd install?

(Founder Stories) Stack Exchange CEO Joel Spolsky On When To Take VC Cash

Today, Stack Overflow founder Joel Spolsky announced that he raised another $12 million in venture capital and that he is changing the name of his company to Stack Exchange. He also happens to be our next guest on Founder Stories, the TCTV show where angel investor and Hunch co-founder Chris Dixon talks shop with other founders. (Disclosure: Dixon is also an investor in Stack Exchange). The interview was taped before this announcement, but in the clip above Spolsky talks about when it's right to bootstrap a startup versus taking venture cash. In his mind, there are Ben & Jerry's types of businesses and Amazon types of businesses. The first one is a slog, builds slowly, and is better done as a bootstrapped startup. But if there is a land grab going on?as there is right now in Q&A and expert sites?then the venture route can help a startup get big as fast as possible.

Evernote for iOS completely overhauled, now faster and easier to use

Evernote 4 for iOS, massive UI overhaulEvernote for iPhone, which is almost two and a half years old, has been completely overhauled. The new version, Evernote 4 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, is free, and available from the App Store.

In the blog post launching the new version, Evernote says that the new version is based on its findings from the last two and a half years. "[...] Users want faster access, easier note creation, better browsing and more ways to find what they're looking for" -- and, with Evernote 4, that's exactly what you get.

The New Note screen now looks completely different, and now features much easier access to every kind of notetaking functionality (audio recording, camera snapshot, etc.) Browsing by notebooks and tags has been made significantly easier, too.

As always, it's better to just download the new version and try it out. Or, if you prefer, watch the video after the break, or even flick through the gallery below.

Jolicloud becomes Joli OS, Jolicloud dashboard headed to Firefox and iPad

Jolicloud, once only a cloud-focused Linux distro for netbooks, has been re-branded as Joli OS. The company's focus has shifted slightly, though the goal is still to provide access to a fun, easy-to-use Internet experience. In addition to offering the OS itself, the Joli "cloud" portion will become a Web-based launchpad which users can install in Google Chrome (already available), Safari, Firefox, and even on the iPad.

The company has also announced a set of changes in the Joli OS 1.2 update, which brings an integrated file browser, an automatic Jolicloud login option, and Guest mode -- for those times when you want to let a friend take your Joli OS-powered notebook for a spin.

Add a keyboard shortcut to a Chrome bookmark or bookmarklet

Add a keyboard shortcut to a bookmark in Chrome 9
It occurred to us, after writing yesterday's list of Chrome keyboard shortcuts, that there was one glaring omission: bookmark shortcuts.

Not only does the Bookmark Bar take up valuable real estate, but no one really wants to click through folders of bookmarks to find what you're looking for.

Now, Firefox has 'Smart bookmarks', which lets you add a keyword to a bookmark. Chrome, however, only lets you assign keywords (and thus keyboard shortcuts) to search engines.

Fortunately, with a little bit of hacking, that doesn't matter.

Apple TV software update adds NBA League Pass, MLB.tv and Netflix 5.1 audio support

It didn't make it into the iOS 4.3 update notes, but second generation Apple TV owners are experiencing several new capabilities today including the ability to stream baseball and basketball games via NBA League Pass Broadband or MLB.tv and support for 5.1 audio on Netflix Watch Instantly. The Apple TV isn't the first device to bring these in front of the TV (the PS3 says hello, while Roku is still enjoying a decent lead in sports) but if it's the box hooked up to your flat screen already we see no reason to quibble -- if you're not seeing the 4.2 update yet, try hooking the lil' hockey puck to your computer via USB and letting iTunes do the work. NFL Sunday Ticket access is still the big fish no one has managed to land yet when it comes to sports in a post-cable cutting world, but we;ll wait to find out if there will even be a 2011 season before expecting any word on that.

Immersion haptic feedback SDK for Android released

Immersion haptic feedback SDK for Android
Haptic feedback, which all began with the mythical introduction of the Nintendo Rumble Pak and its use in Star Fox 64 and GoldenEye, is about to get a big boost on the Android platform thanks to the release of the Immersion SDK.

Immersion Corporation, which has long provided haptic feedback technology for a variety of other applications, has only really dabbled in video games before. This SDK is targeted straight at Android game developers, and is free to download immediately -- and royalty-wise, it's free up a $50,000 threshold, too. There's a video of the Immersion development platform after the break.

As for the effects that can be achieved with haptic feedback, the only real limit is the designer's imagination. The SDK comes with a bunch of pre-defined haptic responses which developers can simply plug into their games, but there's also a tool called MOTIV Studio that lets you design your very own rumbles. Hopefully this heralds a new age of games that don't try to vibrate their way out of your hand.

'Haptic,' if you were wondering, comes from the Greek haptikos, which means 'to grasp or touch.'

Transportation secretary Ray LaHood: no restrictions (yet) on in-car information

Worried that the fancy-schmancy SYNC system you just ordered up in your Mustang will soon be outlawed? Fret not, speed demon. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will reportedly not push for restrictions on handsfree phones or in-car technology until "the government conducts further research." There are generally two prevailing trains of thought: one feels that any type of calling -- be it handsfree or otherwise -- is a terrible distraction to the driver, while the other feels that properly integrated technology is safe enough for use on the road. As the story goes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating whether systems like SYNC post a "cognitive distraction," while some automakers suggest that motorists are going to goof off with their phone anyway -- might as well make it as safe as possible for 'em. Of course, things could change in short order once this so-called "research" gets finalized, but for now, feel free to request that your OnStar system read on to the next post. Your OnStar system can read Engadget, right?

Based on a post from the Windows Team blog, it appears as though users are indeed heading "to the cloud!" Live Mesh -- the company's cross-device synchronization and remoting platform -- now boasts more than 5 million connected devices.

Microsoft goes on a hiring spree for new Xbox hardware devs, staffing up for next console push?

Before you go leaping to any conclusions, do remember that Microsoft plans on keeping the Xbox 360 going until at least 2015 so we're not really talking imminent changes here. Nonetheless, the software giant has listed a plethora of new job openings, with the most interesting ones being at its Mountain View research campus, where a team responsible for "defining and delivering next generation console architectures" is looking for fresh blood. A graphics hardware architect is sought to ensure that the next Xbox strikes the optimal balance between the awesome and affordable, while a design verification engineer and a few others will be hired to test and help develop prototypes. This bolstering of numbers seems to indicate Microsoft is starting to ramp up research and development on its next-gen home entertainment linchpin, and while nothing's likely to emerge from those Mountain View labs in the short term, the mere sound of clanking tools and buzzing electrons is getting us excited already.

Google pulls 21 Android malware apps with Trojan rootkit, over 50,000 users infected

Android logoThanks to a tip-off by a redditor, and some investigation by Android Police, Google has pulled 21 Android Market apps that were infected with a backdoor Trojan rootkit. If you downloaded any of the infected apps, they will be automatically deleted from your phone.

The attack vector was ingenious, and plays on the Android Market's biggest weakness: the almost complete absence of app moderation. The nefarious developer crafted 21 apps that share the name of legitimate apps (such as 'Chess'), and into each of them he inserted some Trojan code. The apps then quietly report your sensitive data back to a remote server, while you play with your free app.

According to Android Police, the apps include a feature that automatically roots the phone (using the well-known rageagainstthecage rooting tool), which allows it to download and execute arbitrary code. Even though Google has pulled the infected apps, these downloaded bits of code could still remain on over 50,000 infected devices. If you think you be infected, you might want to perform a factory reset.

The scary thing is, there's nothing to stop the same app publisher from creating more malware-infected apps in the future, perhaps with the grander plan of creating a botnet. That's the problem with unmoderated ecosystems like the Android Market: you have to take the good with the bad, whether you like it or not. It's a bit like the Wild West in that regard.

What?s Inside a Lightbulb? Twenty Inches of Tungsten Coil

You probably know that an incandescent light bulb uses a tungsten filament.
What’s even cooler is that it’s got 20 inches of double-coiled filament — and tungsten is a brittle mineral that, under normal circumstances, can’t bend at all.
How do they hammer out a brittle metal to a super thin ribbon and then coil it [...]

The Expedition Wooden Tripod for Explorers With Taste

The most surprising thing about the Expedition Wooden Tripod is its weight — 6.20 pounds. Looking at this ash monster reminds me of the huge wooden studio tripods we used back in college, and those things weighed a ton. Sure, 6.2 pounds isn’t light, but it certainly is carry-able.
The Expedition Tripod is made in [...]

Samsung Video Editor now available for some Android 2.2 phones

Samsung, rather stealthily, has released a Video Editor for its Galaxy S and Vibrant Android 2.2 phones. The APK is available for those of us with different phones, but early reports suggest that it only works on Samsung's flagship phones for now. Keep an eye on the xda-developers thread, though: they will probably work out how to get it running on other phones soon.

Functionality-wise, Samsung Video Editor looks fantastic. You can trim video clips and join them together. There are various special effects that can be applied, and you can change sound tracks. There's even a variety of export options!

And yes, in case you're wondering, editing video on your phone will suck your battery dry.

Boeing's new unmanned X-37B launches into orbit, won't come home until it finds Major Tom

Model X-37B might look familiar to you -- it was the name of an autonomous space vehicle that took flight just about a year ago, orbited for a whopping eight months, and then successfully returned to our planet all by itself. Now a new version of the X-37B has blasted off to hang outside of the atmosphere for a while. The spacecraft left Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 41 down in Florida and hurtled to a low-Earth orbit with help of a Atlas V rocket. Boeing isn't saying exactly what it's doing up there, but we suspect this spaceship knows which way to go.

Canon's Rebel T3i / 600D reviewed: not exactly a compelling upgrade

Shocker of shockers -- the T3i really isn't a monumental upgrade from the T2i that came before it. Granted, you could probably glean as much from the raw specifications list, but at least we've got a handful of reviews now to confirm it. The folks at Camera Gear Guide have a fairly exhaustive critique up, and while they lauded the overall image quality and the addition of the new video features (a digital in-shoot zoom and a swiveling LCD), they couldn't wholeheartedly recommend it as an upgrade for existing T1i and T2i owners. Even for newcomers to the mid-range DSLR game, Canon's own 60D seems infinitely more compelling at just $100 more, and it's also hard to ignore Sony's SLT-A55 for $50 less than what the T3i is retailing for. That's not to say the T3i wasn't impressive; quite the opposite, in fact. But it seems as if you'll need to seriously survey the competition before deciding that this one's worth your hard-earned Benjamins. Hit the source link for the full skinny, and hop on past the break for a preview video.

WordPress 3.1 released, features massive writing workflow and admin overhauls

WordPress 3.1 releasedWith over 2,000 code commits and 820 bug and feature fixes, WordPress 3.1 has been released. You can download the new version in its entirety, or simply log into your WordPress.org installation and update via the Dashboard.

The most notable new new change is a massively overhauled writing interface, which should make the entire publishing process both more streamlined and less intimidating for new users. Linking back to old posts and pages is now a lot easier, too (just click a button and start searching), and lots of rarely-used blocks have now been hidden by default (they can be re-enabled in Screen Options).

There's a new Admin Bar, which appears at the top of every page and makes moving around your blog's back end a whole lot easier. For power users and theme makers, there are now Post Formats, which significantly increase the flexibility of WordPress layouts.

For a complete list of the changes and new features, check the WordPress 3.1 Codex page.

Google Apps customers can now purchase additional storage on the cheap

google apps storage
A while back, Google started offering inexpensive storage upgrades for Google Docs storage. Now, users with a domain set up on Google Apps can purchase additional storage, too. The change means you can boost your disk space to 20GB for a paltry $5 per year, or a whopping 1TB for $256 per year (which works out to about $22 per month). That's a very reasonable price for additional cloud storage, and well worth it if you're a heavy Google Docs user.

The space is shared with Gmail as well, so you'll be boosting your mailbox capacity(Thanks for the correction, Nathan!). Hit the Google Enterprise blog for full details!

iTunes to add unlimited downloads for purchased music, MobileMe going free?

itunes unlimited downloadsWhen headlines began cropping up about unlimited iTunes music downloads, we'll admit it raised a few eyebrows in the DS bunker. As it turns out, though, the "unlimited" isn't about an all-you-can-download music buffet, or even the Lala-powered iTunes streaming service you might be waiting for. No, it's about being able to re-download songs you've already purchased through iTunes with less hassle.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently working on deals with the big four recording labels which would give users permanent download access to songs purchased with their iTunes accounts. That means if you ever have a catastrophic hard drive failure (or four) you just need to install iTunes, log in, and pull down all your purchases again. It also means you'll be able to download onto your iPhone and iPad without needing to sync via iTunes on your desktop.

The Bloomberg report also mentions that Apple is still considering turning MobileMe into a free service, something which was reported previously by the Wall Street Journal and verified by the ever-popular "sources familiar with the situation."
